Meridian Digital Active Loudspeakers

British audio engineering with a pioneering history

Meridian has been creating high-performance audio products in Britain since 1977. Throughout its history, the company has challenged conventional ideas about how loudspeakers and audio systems should be designed, combining acoustic engineering, digital technology and elegant industrial design.

The company’s first product, the M1, was an active loudspeaker for the home. Meridian continued to develop this principle, introducing its first digital active loudspeaker in 1989 and the world’s first DSP digital active loudspeaker in 1991.

That pioneering work established an approach which remains central to Meridian today: designing the loudspeaker, amplification and digital processing as one complete system.

Why we work with Meridian

We choose Meridian because its products are engineered as complete, carefully controlled audio systems. Rather than combining a passive loudspeaker with separately selected amplification and external crossover components, Meridian develops the principal elements together.

This gives Meridian’s engineers precise control over the relationship between the drive units, amplification, cabinet and digital signal processing. Each element can be designed to complement the others, reducing uncertainty and helping the loudspeaker perform consistently.

It is an approach that aligns naturally with our own. We believe high-performance audio should be designed as a system, with every product selected for a clear technical reason and every part working towards the same result.

What is a digital active loudspeaker?

In a conventional passive system, a separate amplifier sends a full-range signal to a crossover inside the loudspeaker. That crossover divides the signal between the different drive units.

A Meridian digital active loudspeaker takes a more integrated approach. Digital processing manages the audio signal before dedicated internal amplifiers drive the individual loudspeaker units.

This architecture provides several important advantages:

  • Amplification can be matched closely to each drive unit

  • The crossover can be controlled digitally with considerable precision

  • Timing and phase relationships can be optimised

  • Signal paths between the amplifiers and drive units remain short

  • The system requires fewer separate equipment boxes

  • Performance is repeatable and less dependent upon external component matching

The technology is sophisticated, but the finished installation can be remarkably simple. A pair of Meridian loudspeakers can provide a complete high-performance playback system with the amplification and processing discreetly contained within the enclosures.

Digital Signal Processing

Meridian has spent decades developing Digital Signal Processing technologies for music and cinema reproduction. DSP allows the company to address aspects of loudspeaker behaviour that are difficult to control using passive components alone.

The processing can manage crossover behaviour, driver timing, bass alignment and the way the loudspeaker responds at different playback levels. Meridian’s objective is not to make the processing audible, but to remove barriers between the listener and the original performance.

For the client, the benefit is a sound that feels coherent and natural. Voices and instruments occupy stable positions, bass retains definition and complex passages remain clear even as the volume rises.

Designed for music and film

Meridian loudspeakers are capable of revealing the detail, space and tonal character within a well-recorded piece of music. Their controlled presentation makes them equally valuable within a high-performance home cinema, where clarity, dynamics and consistency are essential.

A Meridian system can be designed for a dedicated listening room, an elegant living space or a complete immersive cinema. Compatible centre-channel, surround and architectural models allow us to create a cohesive sound field while responding to the practical and aesthetic requirements of the room.

Where products from the same loudspeaker family are used throughout a cinema, their shared engineering helps sound move naturally around the audience. Dialogue remains clear, music retains its character and effects integrate into a continuous experience rather than drawing attention to individual speakers.

In-room and architectural loudspeakers

Meridian’s freestanding loudspeakers combine substantial acoustic performance with distinctive, carefully considered design. The range extends from compact models suitable for smaller rooms to the flagship DSP8000 XE, developed through Meridian’s Extreme Engineering Programme.

The DSP9 brings many of the principles behind the flagship platform into a more compact form. Both products demonstrate Meridian’s continued investment in cabinet design, digital processing, amplification and psychoacoustic research.

For spaces where the technology should remain out of sight, Meridian also offers architectural loudspeakers designed for installation within walls and ceilings. These can be used in cinemas, media rooms and wider residential audio systems where interior design is a priority.

The choice between freestanding and concealed loudspeakers depends upon the required performance, room construction, listening positions and visual brief. We assess those factors objectively before recommending a solution.

Beautifully integrated technology

Because the amplification and processing are incorporated into Meridian’s digital active loudspeakers, a system may require less visible supporting equipment than a comparable arrangement built from passive loudspeakers and separate power amplifiers.

This can be particularly valuable in refined living spaces where the client wants outstanding sound without a prominent equipment rack. Cabling and control can be planned discreetly, allowing the loudspeakers and interior architecture to take precedence.

A simplified appearance does not mean that design is unnecessary. Power, signal distribution, control, ventilation, network infrastructure and equipment access must still be considered carefully. These details are addressed during the design stage so that the finished system remains elegant, reliable and straightforward to use.

What this means for our clients

Meridian’s technology is intended to serve the listening experience rather than dominate it. When the system is designed and configured correctly, clients can expect:

  • Natural and intelligible voices

  • Precise stereo imaging and spatial definition

  • Controlled, articulate bass

  • Clarity during complex musical and cinematic passages

  • Strong dynamic performance without unnecessary harshness

  • Fewer separate equipment boxes

  • Elegant integration within the room

  • Consistent performance from a carefully matched system

Whether the client is rediscovering a favourite album or watching a film, the aim is the same: an experience that is immersive, emotionally engaging and faithful to the source.

Imagine This x Meridian

Meridian’s research-led philosophy and commitment to complete-system engineering make it a natural partner for Imagine This.

We combine Meridian’s loudspeaker technology with our experience in listening-room and cinema design, acoustic planning, system integration and calibration. We consider the room dimensions, listening positions, required output, loudspeaker locations and acoustic environment before selecting the appropriate models.

The wider system is designed with equal care. Sources, control, signal distribution and room acoustics must all support the performance of the loudspeakers. Once installed, the system is configured and evaluated within the room rather than assumed to be correct from its component specifications.

This considered approach allows us to realise the capabilities of Meridian’s technology and create a system that is tailored to the property and the people who will enjoy it.

Designed and supported for the long term

Premium audio should continue to perform long after the initial installation. We therefore design Meridian systems with documentation, service access and future support in mind.

Our understanding of the complete installation enables us to assist with configuration changes, additional sources, room alterations and suitable upgrade paths as the client’s requirements develop.

By combining Meridian’s integrated engineering with careful room design and long-term technical accountability, we create audio systems that are sophisticated behind the scenes, beautifully simple to enjoy and capable of providing pleasure for many years.

Imagine This has the expertise to select, position, integrate and configure Meridian Audio technology around your room and listening preferences. Speak to our team about creating a beautifully simple music or cinema system with exceptional clarity, contro
